August 2, 2004 Just like two weeks ago, alternate versions of this comic can be accessed by voting on Top Web Comics and Buzz Comix. This weeks comic was a bit late because I moved this weekend. Sorry! Super Mega Comics is a hilariously random comic. So on Tuesday I went to a library tech conference called WILS-World and co-presented a session called Intelligent Conversational Agents for Information Resource Discovery (PDF) I just answered the technical questions and demonstrated the Conversational Agent I've been working on for months. It seemed to go over pretty damn well. Two companies expressed interest in maybe using a future version. One of them was a guy from ProMega (a biotech firm in Madison). He was wearing an Onion baseball cap(!). I'd like to do this instead of getting a real job, but only if I can get an actual living wage this time. I could be a cartoonist and a programmer at the same time this way. But actually, the thing that really excited me was a presentation given by someone else...
Croquet is the FSCKING OPERATING SYSTEM PROMISED TO US BY THE LIKES OF WILLIAM GIBSON AND NEAL TOWNE STEPHENSON!!!!!!! Who's working on this project? Among other people, the MOTHERFSCKING INVENTOR OF GOPHER. and one of the founders of XEROX PARC!!! (where he led one of the groups that invented the modern GUI) and SOME OTHER PEOPLE FROM THE DAWN OF INTERNET TIME! Look at screenshots! The last few show some of the possibilities of a virtual world you can sculpt and script from within, and then invite people over to play in it. Imagine entertainment sites like homestarrunner.com doing something like this. I think that these people need to talk to mmog creators and gamers about what kinds of things they might want to implement in this project. Instanced areas comes to mind. I'm trying to get ZONK to get in touch with this guys to do an article on them for MMORPGDOT I dunno if I'm the only one this excited about something like this. But that demonstration gave me a massive nerd-on.
